Name: Nate River
Alias: Near, N
Gender: Male
Age: Ten
Birth Date: 24th of AugustLET ME SEE YOU SMILE
••
Height: 5'4"
Weight: 70 lbs
Build: Near has a slender build and is slightly underweight, although it's quite clear this is due to undernourishment and not because of overexerting himself. He is also rather short and seems that he will not grow a great deal in the future.
Eye Colour: Onyx
Hair Colour: White blonde
Avatar: Death Note; Near
Near has never been overly concerned with his appearance; the messy, pale mop of hair upon his head is proof enough of that. His pallid complexion suggests that he isn't too fond of the outdoors and if not for those unnerving onyx eyes, Near would probably be classified as an albino.
Along with the curly locks, his large eyes give him a boyish cute appearance (although his personality is far from adorable).
He doesn't particularly like to eat and only does so when it's neccessary, this has resulted in his growth being quite stunted. He is frail, yet somehow he manages to avoid getting sick.
He picks his clothing based on their comfort and not whether they are in fashion or not. His attire is limited to a baggy bed shirt and either matching pants or denim jeans, which all swim on him.THE DRUGS DON'T WORK

Near's personality is usually described by others as 'robotic'. Indifferent in most situations, he rarely cracks a smile, sheds tears or even frowns. He is blunt and insensitive to boot, he'll say whatever he wishes regardless of how it will hurt someone's feelings. In fact, he sometimes enjoys getting on other's nerves and knowing that he's hit the nail on the head.
He is incredibly skilled at keeping his emotions under control and assessing each situation with a cool head.
Cool, calm and collected, he would rather stay by himself than associate with his peers. He doesn't usually speak unless spoken to and works diligently.
He speaks in a deliberate fashion, which makes it seem that every word is of great importance. His monotone voice and blank stare has earnt him the title of 'boring' by his peers.
He sees the world as a game and likes to thing that he has the upper hand. Although it doesn't appear so, he is determined and, once commited, he will do whatever it takes to achieve it. He will not hesitate to cheat or lie to 'win the game'. He never asks for help and prefers to work behind the scenes, by himself.
Despite all of this, he is not completely heartless. He prefers to stay out of trouble and out of the way, but he still has a strong sense of justice. He will not allow any foul-play on his game board.
He likes to be in control and doesn't like to adapt to new environments. Some emotions confuse him and he sometimes doesn't understand why people react in particular ways.TELL ME YOUR STORY

Family: Elizabeth River (Mother), Noah River (Father), both deceased.
Heritage: British
Hometown: Dunwich , England
Birthplace: Dunwich, England
Nate River was born on the 24th of August to a loving young couple who lived a comfortable lifestyle in Dulwich, England. A child was the only thing they needed to complete their lives and they were overjoyed when Elizabeth gave birth to a beautiful baby boy.
From an early age, Nate's parents suspected that their child wasn't quite like the other children. He displayed a higher level of intelligence, for starters. He was able to complete difficult puzzles and math problems and seemed to be able to comprehend conversations beyond his level. Secondly, he was incredibly anti-social, no matter how his parents doted on him. He had difficulty making friends with children his age, or rather, made no attempt at all to interact with them. This got his parents worried. They sought out many different psychologists, but none seemed effective. Nate refused to open his mouth and communicate with them, he disliked the condescending manner in which the specialists spoke to him, he explained to his parents. They took this into consideration and decided to let him come out of his shell at his own pace.
The years went on, and by the time Nate was six, Elizabeth became distraught by the lack of improvement. She had many mental breakdowns because of this. She screamed at Nate, threw things across the room and even once struck him- but Nate remained the same unresponsive child he always was.
Worried about the mental state of his wife, Noah urged her to seek counseling. Elizabeth was prescribed a cocktail of pills and eventually overdosed, unable to cope with her emotionless child any longer.
At her funeral, not a single tear was shed for her by Nate. Perhaps he was unable to comprehend what was really happening, was what others concluded, however Noah felt differently. Noah blamed his son for the death of his wife and refused to forgive him. He took care of Nate as much as he could- he feed him, made sure he attended school and cared for him when he was unwell, but the two of them communicated less and less. Noah knew it was pointless to try and coax the small boy out of his shell.
A year later, Nate's father died instantly while crossing the road when a car lost control and ran him down. Nate was now alone in the world. Both sides of Nate's parents family were few and in between, and each unable to care for him, so he was forced to live in a nearby orphanage.
It was only a few months later that his genius was noticed by an old man by the name of 'Wammy' who transferred him to another orphanage where he could reach his full-potential. He was re-dubbed 'Near' and all records of 'Nate River' were erased.YOU'RE GONNA GO FAR, KID

Tap, clack, tap
The sound of puzzle pieces being placed carefully on its board filled the otherwise silent room.
Near spent the majority of his days indoors completing puzzles or building massive, elaborate cities out of lego in the shelter of the room he had come to call his own—which would explain the boy's abnormally pale skin.
The last piece of the puzzle was placed and onyx irises scanned over it, taking a moment to admire his 'hard work'. After a few moments of 'appreciating', Near carefully lifted the board before tipping it upside down. The pure white pieces scattered across the room, covering the floor.
A small sigh escaped the boy's already parted lips as he twirled a lock of white hair around his index finger. This was the tenth time he'd completed this puzzle this morning and he was finally beginning to grow bored with it. There always was the option of playing with his toys or building a mini-city, but he just wasn't in the mood.
So what was he in the mood for?
A challenge.
He needed something more exciting to occupy himself with. He could only sit inside and complete puzzles for so long. Wasn't he considered number one? Why was he left with absolutely nothing to do? He'd completed all of his homework, he believed he had adequately studied for the next test… So what now?
He could go outside and play with the other children as the teachers urged him to do many times? No, no, certainly not. He had no interest in running around outside, idly kicking around a ball. How stupid. Most of the children wouldn't like him to join in, anyway. He supposed not many of them liked him, not that he minded. He wasn't particularly fond of them, either.
Slowly, the white clad boy climbed to his feet. He staggered slightly as he went- sitting in his preferred position for so long tended to cramp up his legs.
He shuffled over to the window to peer outside curiously. It was a stunning day outside. The sun was shinning brightly, radiating its brilliant light onto the playground. Its dazzling rays lit up even the darkest corner. The sky was a brilliant blue without a single cloud in the sky. Just by looking, Near could tell that the temperature outside was perfect; not too hot and not too cold.
Children ran past the window, smiling and laughing happily amongst themselves. It always appeared as if the other kids were having the time of their lives outside, was running around really that fun? It was as if the scene was enticing him to come outside, and a normal person would have complied without a second thought. Near, however, was not like other people. He refused to join them. That sort of thing would block his rational mind and he couldn't allow that, not even for a second. Mello was in hot pursuit to become number one and Near couldn't slack off if he wanted to stay on top.
Pushing back from the window, he turned and made his way over to the door. He opened it and looked left and right down the hallway carefully. Sometimes, a few of the other boys hung around his room and waited for to come out. Their intentions were never desirable on his part.
Once he was sure there were no children loitering outside his room, the young genius set off down the hallway while continuing to fiddle with his hair. He always needed something to occupy his hands with in order to stimulate his mind. However, his high level of concentration on the twirling of his hair had caused him to block out all noise around him. He failed to notice the rush of children coming from outside who had rounded a corner and headed his way with no signs of stopping. When he finally did look up, it was much too late….
Like a stampede of animals, they rushed past him and knocked him off balance. The unstable boy then went crashing to the ground, face first into the tiles. It was fortunate that the other kids were too busy with whatever it was they were doing to notice his fall- if Mello had been among them he would never live it down.
Near climbed to his feet unsteadily while he rubbed at his nose gingerly. It was no secret that the boy was a shameless klutz and had absolutely no physical stamina. If somebody were to pick a fight with him, he would surely lose. This was the one thing Mello could certainly beat him at.
Well, nobody was perfect, so of course it was only nature that Near too had his faults.
